1st year students (BD I) in the final jury presented their projects of architectural parasites for the house on the corner of Dzirnavu and Jeruzalemes streets. Along with the studio leader Manten Devriendt and tutors Linda Krūmiņa, Andy Rauchut, the projects were reviewed by the guest jury - architect Kelly A. Nelson (DK), architect and researcher Geo Reisinger (DE) and Architecture programme director Oskars Redbergs.
Parasites are flexible and temporary buildings designed by architects or artists. Parasitism is a non-mutual relationship between organisms where one organism, the parasite, benefits at the expense of the other, the host. Parasitic architecture can be defined as an adaptable, transient and exploitive form of architecture that forces relationships with host buildings in order to complete themselves. Parasites can't sustain their own existence without siphoning energy from the surplus supply demonstrated in host buildings. Architectural parasites don’t follow the traditional building rules. A parasite house or structure wants to make new urban living possible. Those small-scale and mobile architectonic interventions let us think about a new way of planning.
