1st Year Studio: INHABITING THE VOID – The Space between Sign and Understanding

Poļina Gloņina
Assignment no.2 - Fall Semester 2025
Semester Tutors: Rūdolfs Dainis Šmits, Reinis Prēdelis and Liena Šiliņa.
“The earth was without form and void, and darkness was over the face of the deep”
- Genesis 1:2
About the Studio:
Definitions:
Void
- Not valid or legal;
- Completely empty, empty space.
Formless
- Without a clear of definite shape or structure.
Form
- The visible shape or configuration of something; 2. a particular way in which a thing exists or appears.
About the task:
During the 2nd assignment the students will continue to develop the new imaginary space you created in assignment No. 1. The juxtaposition of the plan and section through interpretive analysis and manipulations will be translated into the 3rd dimension. What was before only a plan and a section will now be further developed into a 3D spatial relationship. You will need to imagine the spatial aspects considering the interstitial relationship between the created space (the void) and solid (mass).
The objective of this assignment is to understand connections between 2D drawing and
actual 3D spatial outcome. Physical models will be your working tool!
In addition to the model an axonometric drawing will serve as a supportive tool to help you further understand connections between drawings and physical models. You should see the drawing as tool to easily test the intended spatial environment.
