FAD students design the objects from composite materials

During the autumn semester the 3rd year students participated in a study course that introduced them to new material types and properties as well as innovative way of engineering. Material science was led by structural engineer, Dr.sc.ing. Kaspars Kalniņš who also teaches in the Institute of Materials and Structures at Riga Technical University. At the beginning of the course, students were introduced to basic properties of materials – their strengths and weaknesses, after which students were asked to investigate these properties on special machines, each student having a different set of materials to test.

Amazing summer in inspiring Holland

It was a quite surprise, when studio supervisor architect Cynthia Markhoff invited me and Sabīne for the summer internship. We took this unique chance immediately and couldn't wait for the end of the semester. I believe that everything happens for good, even, if it doesn`t seem like that at the first moment. We happened to live by ourselves in an 3 storey house in Blaricum with a garden and peaceful environment instead of a 15 sq. m. room in a flat with other students, as we thought we would live for 2 months. Every day was great and didn`t seem that we are there for a short time stay – even better - we just fitted there.

2nd year study expedition to Tallinn / 2013

On March 18 and 19, 2013 second year students went on a two day study expedition to the northern Baltic heart – Tallinn. During the last 15 years the Estonian capital has seen a very interesting and exciting turnaround in architecture. In order to approach this semester’s task – creation of a public building, students were encouraged to analyse the experience of the neighbouring country.

1st year study trip to Copenhagen / 2013

From 11 till 15 February, 2013 first year students got "warmed up" for their second semester with a study trip to the Nordic architecture capital - Copenhagen. The study trip is the part of study practice what includes a preparatory research, visit and analysis of architectural objects, a final report and presentation.

Fall semester final presentation of the 2nd year Architectural Design studio I projects

2nd year students did their final presentation of Architectural Design on December 18. This semester students worked with urban housing project making masterplan, researching apartment building typologies and coming up with the project of an apartment building. Together with the studio supervisors Cynthia Markhoff, Pēteris Bajārs, Manten Devriendt and programme director Oskars Redbergs in the presentation participated also the guest jury members - architect Didzis Jaunzems, Head of City Planning Department, architect Jana Jēkabsone, representative of City Architect office Ilvars Metnieks.
